Well it’s been an interesting game. Over the game period, the sharemarket fluctuated considerably due to events such as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the Aussie dollar reaching record highs, commodities falling and continuing concerns about the health of a number of developed economies.
This is reflected in the following:
- only 20% of players finished the game in profit
- the average player portfolio value was $48,153
- the All Ordinaries was down by 4.70%
- only 3 sectors were in profit – energy, telecommunications and utilities.
There wasn’t a lot of trading going in this game… mainly just monitoring positions. I’m pleased to report that I finished in profit (yah!) and in the top 4% of players.
Towards the end I wasn’t fully invested, as there just wasn’t a lot of shares that looked worth buying in such tough conditions. I stuck only to those that were in a definite up trend.
My portfolio at the end was:
Cash on hand $15,246.40
Share holding value $37,797.12
Total portfolio worth $53,043.52
My best performer without a doubt was ILU – $3,853 (+7.71%) who still continued it’s stellar run after the game closed, so would have been a share I held onto until it took a breather. ACR was also up 7% and another I would have held.
My worst performer was IPL – $1,340 (-2.68%) and as you can see I overshot my stop risk of 2%. However all other losses I managed to minimise to 1.2% and 1.4%.
Overall I made 8 trades, five ending with wins, 3 with losses.
So from the game period of 28 Feb to 1 Jun, my portfolio was up 6.09% whilst the ASX200 ended down 2.67% from the start (28th Feb). Not a bad return over 3 months – if we get really creative with our accounting and annualise that figure a 24% doesn’t look too shabby.
Looking back over the years, since February 2009 to now and having only actively traded 15 months during those 30 months (2 ½ years), if I add together all my outcomes my account would be up 43%. The profits don’t seem much at the time but collectively they certainly add up and that’s without the benefit of reinvesting them (as the game resets to $50k each time).
